The Smallpox Vaccine: The Philanthropic Balmis Expedition Overseas at El Corte Inglés Málaga
- Date: At july 3
- Schedule: from 19:30 to 21:30
El Corte Inglés Málaga hosts on Friday, 3 July at 19:30 hours, the 2nd lecture of the Scientific Expeditions cycle with “The Smallpox Vaccine: The Philanthropic Balmis Expedition Overseas”, delivered by Dr. Ana Grande Pérez (University of Málaga). Organised by Encuentros con la Ciencia.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Francisco Javier de Balmis led a unique expedition from La Coruña to deliver the smallpox vaccine to the Spanish colonies overseas. The Royal Philanthropic Vaccine Expedition, ordered by King Charles IV, combined science, logistics and philanthropy, using a pioneering method that made it possible to transport the vaccine across long distances.
The mission protected thousands of people from a devastating disease and laid the foundations for international vaccination. Its story shows how scientific innovation and social commitment can come together to create global impact.
The event will be presented by Dr. Enrique Viguera Mínguez, University of Málaga.
