The story follows a team of scientists working on an underwater oil platform who are hired by the U.S. Navy to carry out the rescue operation of a nuclear submarine trapped, under strange circumstances, on the ocean floor, right at the edge of an abyssal trench several kilometres deep.
A group of special forces soldiers accompanies the scientists. Very soon, the team begins to suspect that what is happening in the abyssal depths is so unusual that it initially escapes their understanding.
