Presentation of the novel “Último Reino. Las rosas púrpuras” by Manuel Atencia Mena at El Corte Inglés Málaga
- Date: At june 15
- Schedule: from 19:30 to 21:30
El Corte Inglés Málaga hosts on Monday, 15 June, at 7:30 p.m., the presentation of the novel “Último Reino. Las rosas púrpuras” by Manuel Atencia Mena. The book explores the fall of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, recreating its final period of splendour and decline (1468–1487) across the territories that today correspond to Málaga, Granada and Almería.
It is the first time this historical moment is narrated from the perspective of those who lived within its borders, witnessing how an identity forged over seven centuries became part of the Crown of Castile under the Catholic Monarchs. The novel stands out for the author’s ability to transport the reader, with a delicate and immersive prose, into the daily life and atmosphere of Andalusi society.
The story follows the Malek family, especially Naím Malek, son of Saíd Malek, captain of the Alcazaba of Málaga. Through his journey, the reader visits Nasrid Granada, travels to Palermo, returns to Málaga and witnesses key episodes such as the conquests of Ronda (Izarán Onda) and Marbella. Fictional characters coexist naturally with historical figures including the Catholic Monarchs, Muley Hacén, Boabdil, El Zagal and Jerónimo Münzer, weaving together a saga that has already captivated more than six hundred readers.
The novel connects from the very first chapter thanks to its vivid descriptions of magical Andalusi settings, supported by extensive research and historical rigour that make “Último Reino” an engaging and distinctive read.
The event will feature Virgilio Martínez Enamorado, professor at the University of Málaga and Arabist, who will speak about the Andalusi legacy in Málaga, and Julia Vélez Montijano, professor of Geography and History, who will present the map of Andalusi Málaga. The event will be introduced by journalist Carmen Moreno.
