Opening of the Exhibition That Virgin of El Perchel at El Corte Inglés Málaga
- Date: At april 17
- Schedule: from 19:30 to 21:30
The Cultural Hall of El Corte Inglés in Málaga inaugurates, on Friday 17 April at 7:30 p.m., the exhibition ** That Virgin of El Perchel **, organised by the Cofradía de la Misericordia and on view until 12 June 2026. The exhibition commemorates the centenary of the change of title of its sacred titular image, originally known as the Virgin of Sorrows and today venerated as Our Lady of Gran Poder.
The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the brotherhood’s artistic and devotional heritage, with special emphasis on the attire and treasures of the Virgin. The exhibition is structured around two narrative lines: Mater Dolorosa and Virgo Potens.
The Mater Dolorosa section explores the origins and history of the original Brotherhood of the Sorrows of the Church of San Pedro, founded in 1721, as well as its later mergers with the Brotherhood of Buena Muerte y Ánimas and, subsequently, with the Brotherhood of the Misericordia in 1921 after its move to the Church of El Carmen. Visitors will be able to see some of the oldest pieces belonging to the Virgin —her embroidered sleeves, her silver dagger and her rosary— along with several valuable paintings and the banners representing the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin.
The Virgo Potens section begins with an introduction to this particular Marian title and presents the most significant pieces of the Virgin’s attire: the embroidered hangings of her characteristic canopy, her skirts and her chapel mantle. All these pieces follow the emblematic aesthetic of black velvet embroidered in silver, a style that has earned her the name “Queen of Silver.” The exhibition also includes her most notable crowns, jewels and lacework, as well as several new pieces created for this centenary. The visit concludes with a large photographic mural tracing the history of the Virgin of Gran Poder from her earliest documented moments to September 2025.
Through this exhibition, the Cofradía de la Misericordia seeks to rediscover the Virgin of Gran Poder as the three‑century‑old devotional icon she has been, is, and will continue to be — that Virgin of El Perchel.
Speakers at the opening will include Juan José Degara Herrera, Brother Superior of the Cofradía de la Misericordia; Enrique Guevara Pérez, presenter of the commemorative poster; and Juan Antonio González García, First Deputy Brother Superior.
