Malaspina: Around the World in the Name of Science

El Corte Inglés Málaga hosts on Tuesday, 30 June at 19:30 hours, the 1st lecture of the Scientific Expeditions cycle with “Malaspina: Around the World in the Name of Science”, delivered by Dr. Enrique Viguera Mínguez (University of Málaga). Organised by Encuentros con la Ciencia.

The Malaspina Expedition (1789–1794) was the great scientific adventure of Enlightenment‑era Spain, comparable to the voyages of Cook. Led by Alessandro Malaspina, it travelled across oceans and continents with naturalists, astronomers and cartographers on board.

Its scientists produced highly accurate maps, collected thousands of plant and animal species, studied climate and stars, and observed the lives of Indigenous peoples in the Americas and Oceania. It was both a political and scientific mission: it sought to strengthen the Spanish Empire while expanding universal knowledge. Although much of its findings remained hidden for political reasons, the expedition became a milestone in global exploration and in the union of science, art and statecraft in the late 18th century.

The event will be presented by Dr. Ana Grande Pérez, University of Málaga.
