Conference: SPAIN, THE GÁLVEZ FAMILY, AND THE INDEPENDENCE OF THE UNITED STATES by Manuel Olmedo Checa (Corresponding Academician of the Royal Academy of History).
The struggle of the 13 colonies for their independence, proclaimed on July 4, 1776, enjoyed Spanish support from the beginning, first secretly and then, beginning in June 1779, in open war against the English.
The strategy for this conflict was primarily led by José and Miguel de Gálvez. Furthermore, Matías, the brother of the aforementioned two, and his son Bernardo, led the operations in Central America and the Gulf of Mexico, which were key to the success of that war.
The research conducted by the speaker over the past four years has shown that the decisive American victory at Yorktown was due to the more than 120 tons of silver contributed by Spain.
The event will be hosted by Miguel Ángel Gálvez Toro, president of the Bernardo de Gálvez Association.
