The victorious general Julius Caesar is forced to visit Egypt to prevent the civil war caused by the lack of understanding between Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy, who share power in Egypt.

Caesar, captivated by the young woman's intelligence and beauty, proclaims her undisputed queen of Egypt, and after the birth of his son, Caesarion, makes her his wife.

This film was one of the last great Hollywood blockbusters, two years of hard filming and an unlimited budget that could have brought the production company to the brink of bankruptcy. But its director, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, one of the most outstanding directors of those years, was able to achieve a perfect balance between spectacularity and the intimate portrayal of characters capable of loving beyond love. And he brought to the screen one of the great love stories in real life and fiction, that of Mark Antony and Cleopatra, and that of Richard Burton and Elisabeth Taylor.
