Lecture 'Some engineering works visited on my travels with Amaduma'

Enjoy the lecture "Some engineering works visited on my travels with Amaduma": "Agustín de Betancourt and St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg," by Juan López de Peñalver, and "The Imperial Canal of Castilla," by Juan Camacho Martínez, civil engineer, on Monday, May 19, at 7:00 p.m., at El Corte Inglés Málaga.

About the lecture

"All of us who like to travel do so for many reasons, although for me there are always three main ones: the view of the landscape and contact with nature, and the knowledge of the art history and gastronomy of the cities we are visiting. But, in addition, as a technician, I have always considered it very important to see those engineering, architectural, and urban planning works of which I only knew photographs.

From my travels with Amaduma through Spain, I have fond memories of the Bárdenas Reales in Navarre, the Romanesque Crypt of San Isidoro in León, as well as the beans of Saldaña in Palencia.

But, in addition, the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in China, the Berlin Parliament designed by Norman Foster, and St. Mark's Square in Venice are works that will always remain in my memory. In this presentation, I want to comment on some historical facts, not just technical ones—with the target audience in mind—about both the works and their designers and directors.

The Imperial Canal of Castilla, considered the most important Spanish project of the 18th century, was directed by Juan López de Peñalver, the first civil engineer from Málaga.

Furthermore, the work of Agustín de Betancourt—father of Spanish engineering and founder of the School of Roads and Canals—on Saint Isaac's Cathedral in Saint Petersburg earned him the recognition of Tsar Alexander I, as evidenced within the Cathedral's interior.

With these two works, visited with Amaduma, we will learn about some aspects of Spanish engineering and, at the same time, remember two of its most important figures: Agustín de Betancourt and Juan López de Peñalver.

The event will be presented by Mayte Tudea Busto, president of AMADUMA (Association of Senior Friends of the University of Malaga).
